General Information
Spravato (esketamine) and ketamine are FDA-approved treatments used for depression, including treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, and other mood disorders. They are administered in-office under medical supervision to ensure safety and effectiveness.
Both medications work on the brain's glutamate system, helping to rapidly improve mood and reduce depressive symptoms, sometimes within hours or days. Unlike traditional antidepressants, they can provide faster relief for patients who haven't responded to other therapies.
Eligibility
Patients must be evaluated by a licensed psychiatric provider to determine eligibility. Typically, candidates have tried other antidepressant therapies without adequate relief. Age restrictions may apply (Spravato is FDA-approved for adults 18+).
Certain conditions like uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, or a history of psychosis may require extra evaluation. Your provider will review your medical history and discuss risks before starting treatment.
Treatment Procedure
Spravato is given as a nasal spray in our office under supervision. You will be monitored for at least 2 hours after each session to ensure safety and observe any side effects.
In-office ketamine is usually given via intramuscular (IM) injection. Each session lasts about 40–60 minutes, with monitoring during and after the treatment.
Treatment plans vary. Typically, patients start with an induction phase of 2–3 sessions per week for 2–4 weeks, followed by a maintenance phase that is personalized based on response and symptoms.
Safety & Side Effects
When administered in a controlled clinical setting, both treatments are generally safe. Patients are closely monitored during and after each session.
Possible side effects include dizziness, nausea, dissociation (feeling "out of body"), elevated blood pressure, and temporary sedation. Most side effects resolve within a few hours after the session.
No. You must have a responsible adult accompany you to and from the appointment, as cognitive and motor effects can persist for several hours.
Effectiveness & Expectations
Some patients notice improvement within hours or days, but responses vary. Your provider will track your progress and adjust treatment as needed.
Yes. Combining ketamine or Spravato with psychotherapy or ongoing psychiatric care often produces the best long-term outcomes.
Insurance & Costs
Coverage varies. Spravato is FDA-approved and often covered by insurance for treatment-resistant depression. Ketamine for depression may be considered off-label, so coverage depends on your plan. Our staff can help verify benefits and discuss payment options.
Yes. We offer transparent self-pay options and treatment packages for patients without insurance coverage.

Avoid driving yourself.
Eat a light meal before your session (but not heavy or fatty foods).
Wear comfortable clothing.

Most medications can be continued, but inform your provider about all prescriptions, supplements, and herbal remedies so we can ensure safety.
Questions & Follow-Up
You will be monitored in the office until it is safe to leave. Your provider will discuss any side effects and schedule your next session. Regular follow-ups are important to track progress and adjust your treatment plan.
You can contact Watson Psychiatry during office hours for questions or concerns. For emergencies or worsening symptoms, follow crisis protocols immediately.
